Temples are the true testimony of our cultural heritage as they served as the hub of socio-economic and religious aspects and activities in our country right from the early period.The Temple Survey Project (TSP) of Archaeological Survey of India was commissioned in 1955 in order to study systematically about numerous temples are situated in different parts of our country. The prime objectives of the Temple Survey Project are to survey, document and publication of unprotected temples for its architectural and historical, archaeological and cultural importance other than the Centrally (ASI) protected temples. Such study is also focused to understand the construction methodology, the usage of core materials, the types of temples, salient features of art as well as architecture and epigraphy etc. The Temple Survey Project was bifurcated into two wings, and one was created at Chennai (TSP, Southern Region) and other at Bhopal (TSP, Northern Region) to survey the earlier one to southern and western and the latter one covers northern and eastern India.
The Temple Survey Project for the last seven decades after its establishment has been achieved a great landmark in survey and study of a large numbers of temples located through-out Indian, and published architectural survey of numerous temples of different periods and dynasties of Southern Region and Northern Region including lesser known monuments/ unprotected monuments in our country. So far the Temple Survey Project (SR) Chennai has published projects on Architectural Survey of Temples are as following:-
