Temple Survey North India

The Temple Survey Project (Northern Region), Bhopal was established in 1955 to survey, recognize, document and analyze temples throughout the country by systematic studiesand analysis. Shri Krishna Deva was the first Superintending Archaeologist of this Project. The Department wanted to explore, document, analyze unknown or known temple of the country which were valued for their religious, social, cultural importance. Consequently, two centers of the Temple Survey Project one at Bhopal for the northern India and the other at Chennai to cover southern India were formed. Since its inception, the temple Survey Project (NR), Bhopal has been intensely involved in study of temples in its jurisdiction. Scholars like Shri Krishna Deva, Shri B. L, Nagarch, Shri R.D. Trivedi, Ms. DebalaMitra, Shri M.D. Khare made extensive efforts for the documentation and analysis of temples to enrich the knowledge on various important temples of northern India by their details studies. Till today students of temple architecture are being benefitted by the works carried out by the scholars of Temples Survey Project.
