Scientific Preservation
The Science Branch of the Archaeological Survey of India came into existence in 1917 with the appointment of Mohammed Sanaullah Khan on 29th June 1917. His basic tasks included chemical treatment and preservation of museum-exhibits and other antiquities. A laboratory was then established at the Indian Museum, Calcutta under the supervision of Archaeological Chemist and subsequently shifted to Dehradun in 1921-22. With the expansion of the survey and soon after the Independence, the scope and activities of the Science Branch expanded manifold. They included Studying the causes of deterioration, remedial measures for chemical conservation, treatment of monuments, analytical studies of material remains and extensive research works.
Treatment strategies for cultural heritage based on following principles:
- Assure reversibility, If technically possible, use materials that may have the opposite effect
- Minimal intervention whenever necessary without dominating the original fabric
- Maintain authenticity, allow the maximum amount of existing historical material to be maintained to ensure consistency with the original design and workmanship (color, tone, texture, form, and scale)
- Honor the archaeological potential, and test their authenticity in design, materials, workmanship or setting, and fulfill their distinctive character and components in terms of cultural landscape
The main activities of Science Branch are:
- Chemical conservation and protection of all Centrally Protected Monuments
- Chemical treatment and conservation of site museum, excavated objects
- To develop scientific and technological studies as well as researches on various conservation materials.
- Chemical conservation of monuments and heritage sites abroad
- Technical assistance to State Protected monuments as well as Cultural Heritage under the control of trusts etc in the form of deposit works
- Impart training on chemical conservation to the students of Post Graduate Diploma in Archaeology, PDDU Institute of Archaeology, Gr. Noida
- Organizing public awareness programmes and workshops / seminars regarding scientific conservation works
