Landscaping of an area reflects the age in which they are created and covers every culture of civilization till the present time. There are different aspects of conservation of monuments, among which bio-conservation is one of prime significance.

The proposal to have an independent Garden Branch in the Survey was mooted by Sir Mortimer wheeler, the then Director General of the Survey. Later on, this resolution was also endorsed in the Central Cabinet represented by Shri Maulana Azad, the then education minister in 1949. In the implementation of this proposal, sanctioned by the cabinet, the Garden Branch came in to existence in 1950.
